All new Sphero hour of code activities for 2022.

Have you heard the good news? CSEdWeek 2022 is just around the corner! Every year the Sphero Team gets super excited to start planning for this dedicated week to celebrate computer science, coding, and, most importantly, fun learning with robots! This year, we’ve created FOUR new Hour of Code activities that you can try with your students, or kids can try with their robots and parents at home. But before we jump into the all-new Sphero activities, let’s dive into what CSEdWeek is all about and how you can participate in the Hour of Code this year.

When is CSEdWeek?

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), celebrated the first week of December, is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity in computer science education, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field, according to csedweek.org. CSEdWeek is December 5-11 this year so mark your calendars now!

What is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code a one-hour introduction to computer science, using fun tutorials to show that anybody can learn the basics. At Sphero, we welcome this opportunity to introduce computer science to learners for the first time, or inspire advanced learners to continue in their programming and coding journeys. That’s what makes CSEDWeek and the Hour of Code so great - there is something for everyone! Whether you’re a first time coder or a seasoned programmer, you can get in on the fun.

Four New Colorful Sphero Activities for the Hour of Code 2022

Learning while having fun; that’s where our new activities come into play. New for 2022 are four Hour of Code activities for Sphero programmable robots and littleBits. This year, Hour of Code’s 10th year, we'll celebrate how computer science helps us explore, play, and create, so our new activities have a brilliant theme - color!

We’ve created four new activities this year that range from beginner to advanced, students in PK-12, and feature Sphero indi, Sphero BOLT, littleBits, and the all-new Sphero RVR+.

Take a look at each one below and decide which (or all!) you want to try this year. They will all brighten your day.

indi: Color Contest (early and elementary learners)

This Hour of Code activity features Sphero indi for early learners.

indi can see color much like you and me. But who is faster at recognizing colors? Who can recognize the most? In this lesson, discover how we see color and challenge indi to a color contest!

littleBits: The Technology of Digital Displays (elementary and middle school learners)

This hour of code activity features Sphero littleBits.

Digital Displays are all around us, from phones to computer monitors to television to modern billboards. But how do they work?

In this lesson, students will dig into the graphic technology behind digital displays and get hands-on experience by programming images and animations with the littleBits codeBit and LED matrix.

BOLT: Additive Color Theory with BOLT (middle and high school learners)

This Hour of Code Activity features Sphero BOLT.

Mix up your colors by tilting and rotating Sphero BOLT!

In this activity, you will explore how additive color theory works by adding different values of red, green, and blue to make many different colors. You will use sensors to measure the robot's orientation and change colors.

RVR+: Hour of Code: RVR+ in Color! (middle and high school learners)

This Hour of Code activity features Sphero RVR+.

Visible light is made up of waves of varying lengths which the eye detects as color. While RVR+ doesn’t have eyes (well at least ones that can see) it does have a sensor that is able to detect a wide range of colors. In this lesson you’ll learn the capabilities of RVR+s color sensor and how to program it.
